The in demand Swedish young actress Alicia Vikander, 28, has been unveiled in stunning new photos as the new Lara Croft for the forthcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ film, which is set to be released next year. She replaces Angelina Jolie who played Lara Croft, the British female adventurer in two films and it looks like the new Tomb Raider film franchise may be a success, surely with more films to follow it, if Alicia Vikander is well received in the movie.
Alicia Vikander, born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden, first came to prominence with her role in Ex-Machina, where she played a humanoid ‘AI’ robot that was made by a reclusive Tech billionaire, hidden in the depths of the forest for one lucky competition winner to participate with, in an experiment that goes horribly wrong. The performance garnered her rave reviews, as did the film, which landed her next role as a supporting actress in The Danish Girl, opposite Eddie Redmayne, a role which saw her win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Now she’s playing the computer game character Lara Croft, which first hit the gaming market in 1996, made by Eidos Interactive and Core Design, which was a huge hit on Sony PlayStation, back when it was released. Lara Croft was said to be inspired by another Swedish woman, artist Neneh Cherry and also by the comic book character Tank Girl and never since then, has there been such a popular female protagonist in any game, after that.
The character of Lara Croft is said to be born in Wimbledon, London and is a daughter of one, Lord Henshingly Croft, so no doubt Alicia Vikander will be using her best aristocratic English accent, throughout the film without fail.
So far, the film’s plot is said to revolve around Lara Croft’s search for her father, seven years after he disappeared from the coast in Japan, this along with the stunning photos from Vanity Fair, should placate the fans for some time, until a trailer is expected to land at some point later this year.
Currently, the film is in production and Alicia Vikander is a natural choice for the role, with Director Roar Uthaug praising her performance, calling her “brilliant” and he has high hopes for the new franchise.
Roar Uthaug explained, “She brings great depth to a complex role that is both physically and emotionally demanding. The film is an origin story for the big screen, focusing not only on Lara’s strength and physical accomplishments but her humanity.”
Uthaug elaborated further, “We see Lara as a young woman, smart and capable but largely unfocused, and follow her on a dangerous journey that will push her to her limits in every sense, and allow her to hone the skills she needs to ultimately become who she was meant to be”.
Alicia Vikander said about playing the sexy adventurer, “When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited. Lara Croft is a truly iconic character. I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits – tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick a**!”
“Yes she is”, boy do we remember playing and or watching endless hours of Tomb Raider being played on the PS1, so let’s hope that Alicia Vikander can bring back a lot of interest to the franchise, after luke warm reviews for the previous two films, starring Angelina Jolie.
Our question is, who will be the sexier of the two Lara Croft’s, “will it be Angelina Jolie or Alicia Vikander?” Let’s hope Alicia is in the better films, if they ever were compared…
