When you’re a famous celebrity, there are fans, super fans and then borderline insane fans. Stories of famous actors, musicians and such, getting stalked and harassed have been reported for years, and actor Eddie Redmayne has become one of those victims.
Gaby Stieger, 49, from Germany, has admitted to stalking the Oscar-winning actor for five years after watching one of his performances in a West End play. Gaby pleaded guilty at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court after repeatedly standing outside Eddie’s house in Southwark, south London and sending unwanted love letters.
Eddie described the experience as distressing for both him and his family. In a statement read to the court, Eddie said that Gaby’s face would “contort with rage” when she spoke about his wife Hannah Bagshawe.
Eddie stated: “I always try to be open and friendly as support from fans is what gives me a career.”
“I deeply regret having met Gaby Stieger – she harassed myself and my family intermittently over five years, leaving us distressed, unsafe and deeply unsettled.”
Eddie also added that Gaby would appear outside his house “out of nowhere – observing me and my family without us knowing”.
“The safety of my family is everything to me and with her behaviour, we can’t feel safe”.
The mother of two, whose teenage daughters live in Germany, first met Eddie after seeing him on stage at Donmar Warehouse in Convent Garden back in 2012. Since then, the obsession simply escalated and overtook her. Including her sanity too, it looks like.
The stalking continued from that point. The following year, she began visiting the set where The Theory Of Everything was being filmed and tried to get him to pose in a picture with her. She also followed him and his wife to a carol service at Eton College.
Gaby started sitting in a park opposite Eddie’s house, and on one particular occasion, followed him to his local Tube station asking him for a hug.
In court, prosecutor Sara Ashkboos said she’d constantly send Eddie love letters “expressing admiration and love”.
“She directly states she is in love with the complainant and asked him to reply,” she added.
In one rather disturbing letter, Gaby wrote: “I know things about you.”
The last straw for Eddie was this month, when Gaby approached him outside his house while he was with his baby daughter, and she tried to touch his arm. Eddie contacted his solicitor after the incident, and repeatedly told Gaby to leave him and his family alone.
Gaby has been released on conditional bail and is due to be sentenced on Thursday afternoon. It just goes to show that no matter how much you may love a certain celebrity, we must always respect their private lives. Otherwise, you’ll end up a deranged stalker, and that’s never a good look.
