Cola – A song that contains some of Lana Del Rey’s most sexually explicit lyrics, has officially been “retired.” The singer will no longer be performing her song “Cola” because of the song’s references to Harvey Weinstein, as well as some of its symbolisms in regards to sex and drugs. The song was released in 2012 on the singer’s Paradise EP. It may have seemed like a good idea back then, but considering the still ongoing and developing stories of sex scandals from Harvey Weinstein, it would definitely not be wise to perform that song at this time.
Lana commented that when she wrote the song, she was imagining a character similar to Weinstein, giving gifts to a young star. Can you connect the dots?
Anyway, Lana told MTV: “When I wrote that song, I suppose I had like a Harvey Weinstein/Harry Winston type of character in mind.”
“I envisioned, like, a benevolent, diamond-bestowing-upon-starlets visual, like a Citizen Kane or something. I thought it was funny at the time, and I obviously find it really sad now. I support the women who have come forward. I think they’re really brave for doing that.”
When hearing of the accusations made against Harvey Weinstein, Lana said she became concerned over the lyrics that she had written. Lana was then later asked if she would “retire” the song from her live shows, and answered with: “Definitely. That would be the only right thing to do. I don’t feel comfortable with it now. I thought of that right away.”
The official lyrics now contained the words “Ah, he’s in the sky with diamonds”, which were changed from the original of, “Harvey’s in the sky with diamonds”, which you can really hear on the original song. The song also contains references to Lana’s taste in “men who are older”, such as the Harvey-like character, and that his wife knows about what’s going on, but saying that “she doesn’t mind.”
Obviously, “Cola” could be taken as a drug reference, as if you hadn’t already noticed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure things out from there. If you’re not familiar with the song yourself, take a listen down below, although, we have to give out the obvious warning of the lyrics, which starts right in the beginning of the said track, so listen carefully to the first few lines of this song.
As easy as it would be to simply change the words, it’s definitely a wise choice for Lana to steer clear from performing this song. While it may come as “a shame” for some fans who enjoyed this particular song live, out of respect for the victims, this decision by Lana is probably for the best.
Lana Del Rey also provided the title track for the 2014 film, ‘Big Eyes’ which was produced by Harvey Weinstein and also starred Amy Adams in the lead role. It was quite a good film, so it’s not like Lana Del Rey and Harvey Weinstein, didn’t know each other.
