The accusations just keep on coming. This time, electropop singer and The Voice contestant Melanie Martinez has recently been accused of rape and sexual assault by her former friend, Timothy Heller.
Timothy (a Female) shared her story via Twitter, describing the kind of friendship the pair had, and that for two whole nights, Melanie would repeatedly ask her if she wanted sex, despite Timothy already having a boyfriend. Even after saying no multiple times, Melanie allegedly started touching her arm, before begging Timothy to let her touch her breasts, promising they wouldn’t “do anything else”. Eventually, Timothy said she became “so exhausted and confused and high and belittled” that she agreed.
“This led her to touching the rest of me,” Timothy wrote. “I never said yes. I said no, repeatedly. But she used her power over me and broke me down. Just so there is no confusion, I was molested by my best friend.”
Timothy claimed Melanie performed oral sex on her and penetrated her with a sex toy. Since that night, Timothy said the pair never discussed what happened, and eventually grew apart. At the end of the post, Timothy made a plea to her followers.
“The only reason I do this now is because I’m hoping, because of recent events, people will believe me,” she wrote. “If you begin to doubt the abuse taking place in this story, I beg you to imagine her role in this being a man. Girls can rape girls. Best friends can rape best friends. Friendship does not equal consent. Silence does not equal consent. I wish it wasn’t so hard for me to convince myself of these things.”

When I wrote this story about my assault, I initially wasn’t going to make the abuser. But I think it’s important for you all to know this is about Melanie Martinez pic.twitter.com/4PQ5oNI2s9

Melanie has since spoken out about the accusations, claiming Timothy “never said no” to what they “chose to do together”. Melanie tweeted the following statement:
“I am horrified and saddened by the statements and story told tonight by Timothy Heller,” she wrote.
“What she and I shared was a close friendship for a period of time,” she continued. “We came into each other’s lives as we were both starting our careers as artists, and we tried to help each other. We both had pain in dealing with our individual demons and the new paths we were forging, but I truly felt we were trying to lift each other up.”
“She never said no to what we chose to do together. And although we parted ways, I am sending her love and light always.”
Melanie came into the spotlight when she appeared on season three of The Voice in 2012, followed by the release of her first album Cry Baby in 2015. Since her success, Melanie’s fanbase, known as “Crybabies” has grown rapidly worldwide. However, will this accusation completely tarnish her reputation? We’ll just have to wait and see.
At this point, we’re unsure whether these accusations will go any further, or if it can be proven to be true. Whilst some loyal Crybabies have stuck by their beloved idol, some have taken Timothy’s side in the situation and have started to name Melanie as a rapist.
It is unclear whether she actually did those things, but it just goes to show that rape isn’t always done by males, and that women are just as capable of committing it too. Case closed.
