Frontman of 30 Seconds To Mars and award-winning actor, Jared Leto, will be joining the Spider-Man universe as vampire Morbius in the new spin off movie, entitled ‘Morbius: The Living Vampire.’
Jared previously played The Joker in 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’, which was arguably one of the worst films of the year. The Morbius movie is currently in production, along with two other movies based on characters from the Spider-Man comic books, rather than an earlier rumoured film about The Joker, starring Jared Leto.
There were a few reports and rumours of the new film’s casting spread online, but now Jared has confirmed that he will be taking the lead role of Morbius, sharing some artwork of the character on his Instagram page.
Aside from Jared, no other cast members have been announced, but hopefully we’ll get to find out soon. However, it has been revealed that Daniel Espinosa will be directing the film, and the script will be written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.
So, what will the film be about exactly? It’ll focus on anti-hero Morbius, aka Dr Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease. He attempted to cure his illness, but the results were disastrous. Instead of being cured, he developed a condition that was a form of vampirism, including a thirst for blood, fangs and super strength, hence his title as “The Living Vampire”.
The character was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane making his first appearance in the 1971 comic “Amazing Spider-Man No. 101” (also the first issue not written by Marvel creator Stan Lee). He was originally against Spider-Man, but over time, he became somewhat of a heroic figure instead, and even had his own comic book titles.
As well as this upcoming movie, there are other Spider-Man-themed films in production, including ‘Venom’ (starring Tom Hardy), ‘Silver & Black’ (due to start production in 2019) and ‘Silk’ (aka Spider-Man’s Cindy, who was played by Tiffany Espensen in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’). So far, there has only been a release date set for ‘Venom’, which is in October this year, as the others are still in the very early stages of pre-production.
Are you looking forward to this Spider-Man spin off and coming other titles, or do you think that Jared Leto was a poor casting choice? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
