It seems another star has been pushed to quitting social media over online abuse. In this case, Australian actress Ruby Rose has deleted her Twitter account following backlash after she was cast as ‘Batwoman’ for the rebooted TV series.
Ruby Rose is Jewish as well as lesbian, and has been open about her sexuality since 2006. She seemed to be the perfect choice for the role of Kate Kane, who will be the first openly lesbian superhero lead on television.
Her casting was confirmed last week by DC Comics, and the show is expected to be released on The CW Network in the USA by early 2020. The show is part of DC’s move to make its publications more diverse.
However, the announcement was criticised due to Ruby not being Jewish or gay enough, with some users trending “#RecastBatwoman” in an attempt to boycott her role completely.
im seeing opinions abt how people should be angry at WB for & not RR for the #batwoman role. Believe me people are mad at the CW/WB too but to say RR isnt at fault too is wrong. She knows BW is jewish, its in the character description and yet she still auditioned +

Before closing her Twitter account, Ruby responded to the harsh criticism through a tweet: “Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be Batwoman’ come from? Has to be the funniest, most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read.”
“I came out at 12? And have for the past five years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’. How do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys.”
“When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable. When we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group.”
“But hey, love a challenge. I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more.” she continued. “I am looking forward to getting more than four hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next two projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”
Ruby expressed her excitement through her Instagram, saying she felt “beyond thrilled and honoured” and described the opportunity as a “childhood dream”.
This incident is similar to when actress Kelly Marie Tran deleted her Instagram following abuse from Star Wars fans over her role in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’. Daisy Ridley, who plays the lead female role in the film, also deleted her Instagram account for the same reason.
DC Comics have not yet commented on the criticism, but Ruby claims she is only taking a break from Twitter in order to focus on her work. So, it looks like she’ll still be playing the lead role of ‘Batwoman’ at this point, and why not?
Although, it seems nowadays that unless an actor or actress is exactly like the character they’re portraying, then you can expect outrage, even for the most silliest reasons. However, if you think someone else would be a better fit for the role of ‘Batwoman’, then who would it be? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below.
