Tourists Flock To “Dildo” In Canada, And End Up Loving The Place

There’s plenty of serious news circling beneath the mainstream media’s news radar, but we’ve decided to avoid it all, because apparently there’s a town in Canada called Dildo.

We know what you’re thinking. That can’t be the name of a town which you would come to expect to be standing in the north-eastern part of Canada, but it is! It’s part of the Newfoundland and Labrador province, and the town of Dildo sits at the bottom of Trinity Bay, not far away from Dildo Island, which is approximately 60km west of St. Johns’.

As they say, you learn something new every day. The town of Dildo, which has a population of approximately 1,200 inhabitants, was founded and named around 1711, and the name originates from the wooden peg used to lock oars into boats in the seaside town.

In recent years, Dildo has become a tourist attraction with flocks of tourists coming to take selfies next to the town’s sign, but locals insist there’s more to the place than just a quirky name. Those that are said to explore the town and island actually end up loving Dildo.

Perhaps it’s the boats and the water nearby, or the allure of Dildo Island, which is an all-encompassing and charming seaside spot. Roger George, behind one of Newfoundland town’s new craft beer company said, “People may come to Dildo for the name, but when they come they discover it’s much more than this quirky name. It’s a beautiful place of hardworking people.”

In the 20th century, many campaigns to change the town’s name have been unsuccessful, retaining the name thought to be given to the town by Captain James Cook and Michael Lane in the mid 1700’s.

Paula McEntegart, who runs the Music and Friends Café and Dildo Boat Tours and Adventures (a striking name by the way), says she wants the town to be known as a place to “throw your worries away and come and just relax.”

The question still remains as to how the town got its name, but as stated previously, it is believed to be from the 18th century name of the wooden peg used to lock oars of a boat in position, which were used by cod fisherman in Newfoundland.

Although there’s no pornographic link, locals have begun to capitalise on the name to encourage tourists to visit, with the Dildo Days Festival, led by Captain Dildo, which is held annually in the Canadian town.

Other excursions in Dildo include whale watching, seabird and iceberg spotting trips, as well as easy food from the Dildo Dory Grill.

Dildo isn’t the only obscurely named town in Canada, with other quirky names of towns including ‘Come By Chance’ which is about an hours drive away from Dildo. Let’s not forget about ‘Spread Eagle Island’, which lies south-west of Dildo across the bay, also located in the Newfoundland and Labrador province.

Interesting place, eh?
