Clothing brand Diesel have recently released an anti-bullying campaign, “Hate Couture”. However, the advert has been criticised for featuring rapper Nicki Minaj.
The reason for the criticism is that some people have actually said that they have been bullied by Nicki Minaj herself, therefore, making her appearance in a Diesel Anti-Bullying advertisement a little more than hypocritical… Imagine our shock?!
The advert, which also stars Bella Thorne and Tommy Dorfman, features celebrities wearing clothes with negative words they’ve been called online. Nicki Minaj wears a hoodie with the phrase “the bad guy” on it, while Thorne wears a white shirt that says “slut”, and Dorfman models a jacket that says “faggot”.
The Italian retailer Diesel’s slogan for the advert was “the more hate you wear, the less you care”, but viewers have questioned the casting, particularly within regard to Nicki Minaj who’s somewhat of a renowned bully, which was pointed out immediately by fans.

Those who claim to have been bullied by Nicki Minaj are brand and social media guru, Jerome Trammel, and writer Wanna Thompson.
Jerome Trammel claims Minaj encouraged her fans to attack him after he criticised her for “slut shaming” in an interview with Elle magazine. Wanna Thompson on the other hand, claims the bullying came from the rapper directly after she questioned the lyrics on Minaj’s latest album “Queen”. Minaj then allegedly contacted Thompson’s employer and got her fired from her music journalism internship.
Thompson spoke to BBC Newsbeat in August about receiving the abusive messages from the star’s Twitter account, describing the experience as “heart breaking”, as she was originally a fan of Nicki Minaj.
“I was flabbergasted because I thought the page was fake,” Thompson said at the time. “I kept on trying to refresh my twitter to see if it was a parody page. Maybe it was someone who copied everything about Nicki Minaj’s profile and they’re trying to get a rise out of me, but to my surprise, it was real.”
Nicki Minaj later denied making contact with Wanna Thompson during an interview with Funkmaster Flex shortly after the writer had shared her abusive experience.
Diesel has responded to the backlash for the advert, stating through Twitter: “We’re here to support anyone who’s getting hated on, and Nicki is one of them”
Nicki Minaj has not commented on the criticism herself, but has said on an Instagram that she is often labelled as “the bad guy” (hence her hoodie in the advert) by critics.
“You need people like me. So you can point your finger and say: That’s the bad guy” she wrote.
