We all remember the Suicide Squad film, since it wasn’t that long ago when the film came out. And we all remember, whether you’ve seen it or not, just how negatively it received was by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film is described as having a “muddled plot, thinly written characters and choppy director.” Oh, and that embarrassing forehead tattoo. So edgy. However, we may just be getting a new and (hopefully) improved Suicide Squad film by Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn.
Gun is currently in discussions with Warner Bros to write a new film, and it has also been reported that he has an “eye to direct” the film also. Actor Dave Bautista, who played Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has already offered to join him in the new project.
Despite the negative criticisms, the first Suicide Squad movie still raked in $746 million (£568 million) worldwide when it was released back in 2016. Plus, it at least did have its fair share of die-hard fans.
A sequel and spin-off for Margot Robbie and Jared Leto’s characters were announced this year, however, it is not clear as to whether the same cast will appear in Gunn’s new film.
Although it has been reported that the new film will be a sequel, BBC Newsbeat were informed that it will be a “new take” on the franchise, rather than a direct sequel. By the sound of things, it’s either going to remake the original story from the first film, or take on a whole new one completely. Who knows at this point?
As for the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, there is still no announcement on who the new director will be, making the third instalment of the franchise very uncertain.
After Gunn was fired by Disney back in July for making tweets seemingly joking about pedophilia, thousands of fans signed a petition to reinstate him, as well as the entire cast signing an open letter. However, it was confirmed back in August that James Gunn would not be rehired.
But now, he’s been hired by Warner Bros and has joined the DC universe, and it looks like Bautista will also be ditching the Marvel universe, having already threatened to leave Disney beforehand if they did not use Gunn’s script in the third Guardian’s film.

As they’re in the very early stages of this new project, with Gunn set to write the script, there’s still very little details that have been announced. However, perhaps a fresh take on Suicide Squad by Gunn will be a good instalment to the franchise, and hopefully it will be a new and improved take on the tacky “cringefest” that was the original film. We’re all counting on you, James! With any luck, Jared Leto won’t be returning as the Joker, will he?
