Grab your yellow chemical suits and masks, because ‘Breaking Bad’ is making a comeback. Just don’t smoke any crystal meth though.
Five years after the popular AMC show came to an end, it has been announced that a Breaking Bad movie could be in the works. The show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, is developing a two-hour movie that will be “set in the existing Breaking Bad franchise”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Albuquerque Journal also reported that filming will begin this month in Albuquerque, where the original series was set and filmed in. It also reported that the project will be titled “Greenbrier’ and it will “follow the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom”.
However, one major question fans are asking is whether actors Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will return to reprise their roles as chemistry teacher Walter White and his assistant (and former student), Jesse Pinkman. The duo sadly didn’t make an appearance on the show’s Netflix spin-off series ‘Better Call Saul’, but will they return for this one?
At this point, it’s unclear as to whether the film will be a prequel or a sequel. However, it wasn’t long before Bryan Cranston confirmed the projected, but he also commented that he currently hasn’t been asked to appear in the film.
“Yes, there appears to be a movie version of Breaking Bad,” Cranston confirmed. “But I, honestly have not even read the script. So I couldn’t tell you.”
“I have not gotten the script. I had not read the script, so there’s a question of whether we’d even see Walter White in this movie! Think about that one.”
Cranston admitted that he was informed by Gilligan that ‘Greenbrier’ was in the works, and has also been given a few hints about where the film fits into the franchise’s timeline.
“I would, absolutely [be in it],” he continued. “It’s Vince Gilligan. If Vince Gilligan asked me to do it, sure, absolutely. He’s a genius. It’s a great story, and there’s a lot of people who felt that they wanted to see some sort of completion to some of these storylines that were left open.”
“This idea, from what I was told, gets into at least a couple of the characters who were not completed as far as their journey.”
By the sounds of things, it looks as though we’ll likely be getting a sequel, considering how ‘Better Call Saul’ was already a prequel taking place six years before the events of ‘Breaking Bad’.
However, regardless of whether Cranston will be in the new project or not, he said he was looking forward to seeing the rest of the cast again. “I can’t wait to see all those people again… even if I just come by to visit!”
Production for ‘Greenbrier’ is expected to start in Albuquerque, New Mexico next month. We’re sure looking forward to hearing more news on this one, as it’ll be interesting to see what happens after the events of Breaking Bad, assuming it is a sequel that is.
