Pokemon Sleep: New game that “Turns Sleeping into Entertainment”

In the latest Pokemon news, it has been announced that a new game is in line with its hit Pokemon Go, though not one many were expecting. We all know about Pokemon Go, the popular mobile game that encourages walking in order to find and catch certain Pokemon. Next up in line, however, is Pokemon Sleep.

Worldwide Pokemon fans suffering with insomnia, will surely love this one! But, what will this new game really be about? Well, as the title suggests, the new game will involve tracking a player’s sleep patterns to affect gameplay.

This was just announced during a press conference, which covered numerous topics such as Pokemon’s official expansion into China and branded vest shirts coming to the west.

The game is being developed by Select Button and aims to “reward good sleep habits as part of a healthy lifestyle”. Select Button previously collaborated with The Pokemon Company on the smartphone app Magikarp Jump. The developers of Pokemon Go, Niantic, is also cooperating on the new game. Now if you’ve had trouble sleeping, and you’re a fan of the world of Pokemon, this might just be that little bit of encouragement that you need to nod off.

Since its release in 2016, Pokemon Go has remained one of the most successful smartphone games worldwide, with millions of active users playing every month.

Alongside this new concept, a new device was also announced during the conference by Pokemon’s president and CEO, Tsunekazu Ishihara. The device is called the Pokemon Go Plus+ (pronounced as “Plus plus”) and could likely either be worn as a wrist strap or lanyard. The device will work as a pedometer and game interface. It’ll also function as a sleep tracker through the accelerometer and communicate the data to a smartphone device via bluetooth.

The Go Plus+ device is currently being developed in cooperation with Nintendo, which has reportedly made some brief “quality of life” hardware research. However, this division was allegedly dismissed in early 2019, according to the Nikkei.

“The concept of this game is for players to look forward to wake up every morning,” Mr Ishihara said during the conference.

Initial reactions to this announcement were typically of disbelief, as well as confusion on its rather odd concept. Others have anticipated the intrusion of Pokemon in other elements of daily life for some time.

Aside from this strange approach for a Pokemon game and the new Go+ device, there have been other announcements made. These included – a new Detective Pikachu sequel slated for release on the Nintendo Switch, an Android and iOS titled Pokemon Masters produced in partnership with DeNA and finally, Pokemon Home, a cloud-based Pokemon storage and trade system that will work across numerous games.

Going back to Pokemon Sleep, it has been slated for release next year. However, a specific date has not yet been revealed, so you’re going to have to wait a little while longer.

Will this new Pokemon Sleep idea be something that anyone would be interested in using? Or is the concept just a little too strange for even the most devoted Pokemon fan? Will it sink or swim, or send you to sleep? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
